Weather experts in China claim to have induced the world's first artificial snowfall. By "seeding" clouds with particles of silver iodide, the scientists provoked snow to fall to a depth of 1cm over the Tibetan Plateau. Although many experts question the effectiveness of cloud seeding, Tibetan meteorological engineer Yu Zhongshui pointed out that, "to launch artificial precipitation can help alleviate drought."

Lindsay Lohan has pulled out of the chance to team up onscreen with Keira Knightley in a new Dylan Thomas biopic due to contract issues. The two stars were expected to appear together in The Best Time Of Our Lives, but Lohan has now passed on the project after failing to work out an agreeable contract with producers. According to American publication Life & Style, Lohan was supposed to start work on the film this weekend. An insider tells the magazine, "She didn't back out and they (producers) didn't pull the deal, but there were changes that weren't to her liking, and that was that." Lohan and Knightley were rumored to be part of a steamy threesome in the film. Lohan was slated to play poet Thomas' wife Caitlin MacNamara, while Knightley will star as the poet's childhood friend.
Angelina Jolie coped with kidnap threats while filming A Mighty Heart in India recently by finding quiet places to sob. The actress has revealed she was alerted to terrorist plans to abduct her children and told to make sure that her kids' beds weren't close to open windows. But Jolie refused to let those who wished to cause her heartbreak see her in moments of weakness - and so found privacy to cry. She tells the forthcoming issue of US magazine Entertainment Weekly, "If things got too heavy, there'd be a place for me to cry by myself." Meanwhile, Jolie and boyfriend Brad Pitt's publicists have joined forces to angrily deny tabloid reports the pair is close to splitting up after agreeing to a trial separation. Jolie's manager Geyer Kosinski tells Usmagazine.com, "They are together and very happy," while Pitt's publicist, Cindy Guagenti, blasts, "I responded to those tabloids with the correct information and they choose not to run it." Guagenti adds, "There is absolutely no trial separation." Guagenti continues, "As a matter of fact, Brad and the kids are traveling to Prague to be with Angelina while she films her (new) movie. Then they are both going to Cannes to promote Ocean's Thirteen and A Mighty Heart. After that, the whole family is going to Los Angeles for the premiere of Ocean's Thirteen and then to New York for the premiere of A Mighty Heart."
Music mogul Simon Cowell has acted quickly to defend himself against reports he rolled his eyes during an American Idol contestant's tribute to the students of Virginia Tech University on the TV talent show on Tuesday night. Internet sites went crazy after the incident with critics accusing judge Cowell of being insensitive to singer Chris Richardson's message to friends caught up in the aftermath of Monday's campus massacre. TV cameras captured Cowell making a sarcastic gesture as Richardson said, "My hearts and prayers go out to Virginia Tech. I have a lot of friends over there... Be strong." But he insists he wasn't listening to what Richardson was saying and was caught up in conversation with fellow judge Paula Abdul. Speaking on show host Ryan Seacrest's Los Angeles morning radio show yesterday morning, Cowell, who made his own tribute to the students of Virginia Tech during American Idol, admitted he was horrified to become a target of nasty stories. He said, "You get this crazy story that appears that I rolled my eyes disrespectfully at Chris because he made the comment... The truth was I had switched off at that point and I was talking to Paula. I did wanna clear this one up because this is a very sensitive subject. The irony was is that we did want to set the right tone on the show."
